A chef is a highly-trained professional who is skilled in the various aspects of food preparation and cooking. A chef will often specialise in a particular area of cooking, such as fish or meat preparations, but may also focus on a particular cuisine type. The origin of the term itself is “chef de cuisine”, which is French for the head of a kitchen.
There can be different paths to becoming a chef, as for example through formal training and qualification from an accredited culinary education institution, but also by pursuing a period of apprenticeship under a qualified and experienced chef. A chef must be aware of all the best food handling practices and regulations of the country in which they operate, which may include rules dealing with food safety when handling and storing food.
